SP9326: W/Ending 27/11/11 - Scarcely anything...

Tuesday night saw a Tmin of 0.3 Celsius, not before a Scarce Umber  was found on the Heath trap - the 'Ratface' Skinner was drying out from the previous night.... The only other moth was a rather worn specimen of The Chestnut.

SP9326: W/Ending 20/11/11 - Scarce Umber

The weather continues fairly settled and mild with extensive fog over the weekend.

Finishing work in the middle of the night is no fun, but it does mean one can check the trap for goodies before they fly off /get eaten. So, at 3am on the 18th, I was pleased to discover two new* garden moths - Scarce Umber and Winter Moth, which rather justified continuing to trap after three blank catches this week.

Moths are very few indeed, so, for the time being, updates will be weekly (if any) unless a real goody turns up - unlikely...

SP9326: 20/10/11 - Red-line Quaker

T.min was 3.5 Celsius, but from 01:00 the temperature rose quite quickly to 7.8 by first light.

Conspicuous by its absence so far, Red-line Quaker was new* for the garden. The Blair's was rescued from a spiders web, luckily it seemed too cold for the web owner to emerge.

SP9326: 16/10/11 - Wonder of the Night

A milder night, with a T.min of 5.8 Celsius.

Recent successes were tempered by two consecutive blank score-sheets. Temperatures plummeted and the first (mild) frosts of the season arrived. However, two new* garden macros last night raised spirits as, at last, a fine Merveille du Jour appeared. A truly splendidly marked moth - it begs the question of why not 'Merveille du Nuit' ? Still, c'est la vie n'est-ce pas?
Oh - Large Wainscot was the other garden débutante (two, in fact).

SP9326: 13/10/11 - Magic Carpet !

T.min: 5.7 C with light airs.

Two more new* for the garden - Dark Chestnut and, quite unexpectedly, a Pine Carpet ! Suspicions as to its identity were confirmed after consulting the recorders. It's a rare resident with a local distribution. Jay Clarke has been getting them just up the road in Heath & Reach.

SP9326: 12/10/11 - Juniper Carpet & Dotted Chestnut

T.min was 11.6 Celsius with light airs and a trace of rain towards dawn.

A couple of new* macros after a pretty barren few weeks. A well marked Juniper Carpet was at the box late evening and continues this years theme of scarce carpets caught in the garden. It  was followed by a second individual on a wheelie-bin close to the trap this morning. A Dotted Chestnut was even better - these are spreading north, apparently. Both species are scarce/local. Year first Yellow-line Quaker.

A new* moth on the Buddleia today appears to be 389 Choreutis pariana (Apple Leaf Skeletonizer). DVM seems to think it probably is, although a dull specimen, as none of the other Choreutidae  look likely. Any comments welcome...
