SP9326: 26/07/12 - Good turnout

After a week moth-ing in Cornwall, and still in a very warm spell weather-wise, it was nice to trap locally again.
Plenty were new for the year and two were new* for the garden - Oegoconia agg. and Blastodacna hellerella. The Lackey have returned in numbers.
DVM could not confirm 1187 Epiblema costipunctata from the poor photo submitted, mainly because the pale dorsal blotch is usually rectangular, without a triangular peak. Personally I think it looks good but would value any other opinions...

SP9326: 17/07/12 - Lacking Lackeys

A minimum temperature of 15.6 Celsius tempered by a blustery wind produced one new* micro - Ephestia parasitella - but at least it was dry.

The table below shows the totals of The Lackey seen by week (ignoring the 'year' part) over the three years 2010-2012.
Last night's individual was easily the latest 'first of year' (by 16 days) and is chronologically the 28th of the 33 seen over this period.

SP9326: 10/07/12 - Dotted Rustic !

Tmin: 11.0 Celsius with a fairly breezy SW wind - at least it didn't rain for a change.

Dotted Rustic was new* for the garden and follows hot on the heels of one trapped by the recorders the day before (which was the first VC30 record since 2006). It's an interesting moth which was previously found throughout the county during the 1980's, but whose status is now classified as an extremely rare resident, with an extremely local distribution. It is known to aestivate, but the larva has not been found in the wild and thus the (wild) food plant is unknown. Some believe it is a partial immigrant which boost local populations.
Barred Straw was also new.

SP9326: 04/07/12 - Tiger in the Tank !

It was way past bedtime, conditions looked good, and with an early start for work in prospect I followed the 'just one more look' policy of mothing. What I least expected was a stunning Scarlet Tiger sitting on the trap.
