I'm using the Heath 15w for the next few days - this means less moths which suits current work commitments.
Two new* micros were Lobesia abscisana and Grapholita janthinana - although the former could be 1079 Piniphila bifasciana , which was caught on the 9th July 2011, so I reserve the right to change my mind !
A couple of Common Rustic agg. variations are also presented.

A minimum of 13.5 Celsius, and a fair catch.

Barred Rivulet was new* for the garden - an uncommon resident with a local distribution. It can remain as a pupa for up to five years! Long expected additions were Wormwood Pug and Shaded Broad-bar, the latter was in a hurry to be somewhere other than in front of a camera!

TL0024: 23/07/11

Four new* moths were Scorched Carpet and Rhomboid Tortrix. One of the dominent tree species is Cherry, thus it was no surprise to see Cherry Fruit Moth (Argyresthia pruniella). The fourth one is probably Parsnip Moth - they do seem slightly variable, and this one may be worn/faded (if you have an alternative ID please leave a comment).

A minimum temperature of 9 Celsius - very little activity after 01:00. At least it was dry - is it really July?

Despite the conditions, there were three new* micros:
Aproaerema anthyllidella - suspected as such, and confirmed by DVM. Only recorded in SP92,95 TL01,24 so not new to the 10Km square, but still a good one with only 16 previous records in the database.
There were two of Lozotaeniodes formosanus - quite a striking moth.
Not so welcome (maybe) was Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner.

Emperor Moths

I've still not found an adult Emperor Moth, but we are playing foster parents to ten larvae. They are getting quite large now - all bar one which is lagging behind despite lots of nice Hawthorn to munch on.

Frustratingly, trapping was curtailed after three hours before rain stopped play. However, on the bright side, five new garden moths dropped by.

Gelechia senticetella (Staus: Nb - nationally scarce) was first discovered in the UK in 1988, Bedfordshire in 1997, and now in my garden ! There are twenty-six records in the database. There are thirty-nine previous records of Aethes rubigana.

SP9326: 14/07/11

What ? No new moths...! Well... yes, as the discovery of a few leaf mines on a pioneering Rubus sp. meant that Stigmella aurella has bred and was, therefore, new to the garden. Sadly the offending 'bramble' had to go. Oh for a larger garden !

50 Stigmella aurella
Yesterday evening cooled down quite quickly, which no doubt kept the totals low.

TL0024: 09/07/11

I have used the battery powered 15w actinic Heath trap on ten occasions over the last two years at this site. The 'Ratface' Skinner pulls in more moths, but it's mains powered and thus has only been used in the garden (and in a Cornish garden). Still, the Heath does a job, and not surprisingly four of the species were newly  self-caught moths for the site.

The 'best' of the modest catch was The Gothic - an uncommon moth with a local distribution - 95 records in the database.
