SP9326: 22/07/13 - A Splendid Night !

Tmin: 19.2 Celsius - Scorchio! - the temperature was 20.3 Celsius @ 03:00

In the context of this garden it was a super night. New* garden moths encountered began with a Vestal - an immigrant which I've recorded once before in Cornwall.
Next was Caloptilia alchimiella - a smart orange/purple/yellow gracillarid whose larvae feed on Oak. There are seven previous records in VC30 as of 2011. It was recently split from C. robustella, and, as they are similar, ID/confirmation was sought from the micro recorder, David Manning.
DVM also assisted in identifying  Endothenia gentianaeana  - a bird-dropping-type tortrix.
A couple of 'fillers' were Prays fraxinella and Tinea semifulvella.
Lurking under the last tray was a Mere Wainscot - wainscots are generally scarce here with Smoky, Common and Bulrush recorded so far.

Thus, with six new moths and three new-for-the-year species thrown in, it was a memorable session.

SP9326: 13/07/13 - Pluming Great !

Tmin: 15.8 Celsius. One of those warm/ sultry nights where some folk find difficulty sleeping. Brilliant for moths - and caddisflies, and craneflies...

There were three new* moths two of which were plume species (which makes a change from the usual four species normally encountered). Crescent Plume and Yarrow Plume - the habitat list include sand dunes/quarries for the former, and sandy waste ground for the latter. This closely reflects the habitat around the trap site. Food plants are Restharrow/Spiny Restharrow, and Yarrow respectively.
The third addition to the garden - Celypha rosaceana - is described as local, the larvae feed on Sow Thistle and Dandelion roots.

1064* Celypha rosaceana
